There's been a lot of putting in and taking out. Those of you who know Bruce know that things have to be exact to make him happy. After getting the cabinet over the microwave in, he was so glad he moved the outlet.
Monday, March 21st
Bruce and I went down to Ventura Stone. Everything I had looked at and had liked when Alissa and I went, I no longer liked. We took a larger piece of the cabinetry with us which made a big difference. As I had left with Alissa, I saw a piece I liked and wrote the name down but didn't get a picture of it. Bruce saw it and really liked it. And just like that we had agreed on what to get. Put a deposit down and went on to the flooring store. Wasn't so easy with the flooring. I feel that the counter top is mostly white and gray with streaks of the reddish brown going through it. So we've tabled the flooring hunt until we have a piece of the counter to take with us, or at least until we look at it again.
Tuesday to Saturday, March 22nd to 26th
Nick came over on his days off and helped with getting the upper right and part of the upper left cabinets in. It's so nice that they work well together.
My genius husband made a sliding pipe thingy that helped hold the front of the cabinets on the ledger boards making their work easier.
Bruce worked on getting the lowers in. Nick and his Dad came over to help lift in the heavy corner Susans and half Susan. The bump out from the drain pipe caused problems. Bruce had to take the left cabinet and Susan out and sanded down the back of the cabinet to accommodate the bulge. The corner now sits at a right angle the way it should.
Sunday, March 27th - Happy Easter!
Went over to the to the kids for BBQ lunch. Another couple was there with their two little girls. After a yummy lunch we had an Easter egg hunt for the girls.
Monday, March 28th
Nick was here all day helping get the last 4 cabinets in. The one going over the refrigerator is one of the hardest. It extends out from the wall. Lots of blocking went in. Everything looks so good. Bruce was a bit surprised at the amount of floor space we have. Between the little space we had before and our galley kitchen up north, he's not used to taking more than a step or two to cross from one counter to the other.
Tuesday, March 29th
Went to Mayan Hardwood to buy the plywood for the under layment for the counter tops. Also bought one piece of finished maple ply for the eating counter. I was going to stain a piece and varathane the underside, but now it's all done. The end cabinet on the peninsula is our trash and recycling bins. So glad to have them on the end. Will be really convenient. Can't wait to start filling everything up. It's going to be a bit of trial and error was far as where everything should go. Bruce is of the theory that the first time you reach for something and it's not there, then you need to move it to that spot. I'm looking forward to having that long peninsula counter for baking cookies.
Notice the unfinished edge on the end cabinet on the picture to the right? Once the counter top is in, we have a finished panel that will get attached and sit on the counter top. That cabinet is also longer than the other uppers. It's my "hutch" for my dishes. The cabinet is only 24" wide; by making it longer we can get more shelves in at a height that I can reach. Remember, Bruce and I are not tall people. Bruce put an outlet in the wall space so that we can put the phone base there.
Went to Home Depot and got a Porter-Cable Pin Nailer to use on the cove molding. It will fill in that gap at the top of the uppers. I'm glad Bruce decided to get the nailer; he needs new "toys" to play with. With Nick's Dad moving to Ventura next month, the 3 of them will put it to good use. They're all into wood working.
Wednesday, March 30th
Bruce is out cutting the plywood for the counter tops. Here's a picture of the first one cut.
Hoping to hear from Pacific Sales that the Microwave/Hood is there to pick up today. It will give Bruce something to do while we're waiting for the counter tops to be cut. We'll have the oven and dishwasher delivered once the floor is put down. It's nice that we were able to buy them last year while they were on sale. The warranty period doesn't start until the day they deliver.
