The crown molding is up in the family and dining rooms. Just love the look of crown molding.
June 5th: Carpet is coming out of the hall way today. And the hall closet. That's a chore because of our 20 banker boxes of "allowed" stuff we brought down with us. Think it's time to get rid of some of it. 4 boxes are just Christmas stuff.
Removing carpet includes pulling up all the tack strips around the edge and then patching , with cement, all the holes in the slab from the nails holding the strips down.
Flooring is suppose to be at Home Depot tomorrow (6th). Doesn't mean we'll have it. They have to hire a truck to deliver it to us.... in the driveway. Which means we have to move it all into the garage.
Bruce spent sometime over at the kid's helping Nick with the bathroom flooring and getting their new vanity in. Gives him a break from being on his knees all day here. Plumbing is next.
June 10th: FINALLY! The first boards of the flooring are going down. The boxes are random lengths which actually makes it harder not to have all the seams line up. It's 2pm and we're just working on the 3rd 3 foot width of underlayment. Well it was "we" until Bruce made me come in here to rest. I lay out the boards so he doesn't need to keep getting up and down. Unfortunately, bending over trying to choose the right lengths makes me short of breath. (Yes, I'm seeing doctor's to figure out why. Part of my heart is enlarged but shouldn't be causing this much of a problem).
End of 1st day of laying flooring, we're just half way across the family room. After the flooring is down in the room completely, we'll put the baseboards and shoe molding in before we move onto the next room. As of now, it's family room, dining area, TV room (4th bedroom) then the entry and hall way.
The fireplace is NOT finished. We're going to get all the flooring done and then do the tile and mantle on the fireplace. Want to make sure the flooring is down before September when Julie and Kevin get here.
Took us till Tuesday, 12th to finish getting the flooring laid in the family room. As I type, Bruce is in the garage painting baseboards and the door casing for the garage door. We never changed it out because we hadn't changed that door. 2nd half of the room went slower. Had to take out a section because it felt hollow underneath. Bruce hates that sound, a lot of laminate floors have it. And even though this isn't a laminate, if it doesn't lay flat there's a problem. We're using a cork underlayment that doesn't lay perfectly flat for some reason. By cutting a V out of the "bubble" areas and taping them together, seems to solve some of the problem.
Base boards and quarter round is in most of the family room. Can't do the fireplace wall until we get the fire place completed. Brought in all the flooring from the garage because of the heat; we're afraid the boards will warp. Furniture is now moved back out of the dining area and into the family room.
June 13th: Went to Molly's promotion from Kindergarten to 1st grade. The kids sang some cute lyrics to "You are my Sunshine" and "Start Spreading the News". In stead of singing: "New York, New York" they sang "1st Grade, 1st Grade". It was cute. Molly got all the "site word" awards. Which means she went 2 steps past what was required for reading. It's wonderful to see how much she loves to read. We'll be babysitting for her and Connor and notice she's disappeared only to find her in her room reading. Second picture is with her best friend (and another firefighter kid) Julie. Molly is one of the tallest and Julie is the shortest.
June 15: Dining area flooring went down. Bruce had planned on getting the run that goes from the front door through the dining area and on down the hallway the next day. But it dawned on him as we were sitting in the TV room that the TV room had to be done first. Have to really plan these things out. Since there's 2 doors to the TV room he has to start from the family entry through the TV room and go across to the doorway to the hall. Then he can start the run from the front door down the hallway and meet up with the flooring coming out of the TV room.
Thought I'd throw in a floor plan of the house. I see that the left side line (wall) somehow got cut off, oh well. You can see that there's a doorway from the family room into the TV room and then another leaving the TV room going into the hallway.
June 16: Yea, I got to help! And I'm not being sarcastic either. Bruce got the carpet up and then we started to scrap the glue and residue foam padding off the floor. What a mess. And because "they" knew "they" were going to lay carpeting down, "they" slopped paint all over the concrete slab. What a mess. Did not get it all up today.
One of the big challenges is going to be all the electronic wiring. Our DirecTV and Ooma phone are all connected to the modem. There's the DVR, DVD and Roku boxes to deal with too. Since we didn't want to lose our phone, nor deal with the mess, Bruce just shoved it out of the way as he worked across the room.
You forget all the things you have to deal with along the way when putting down new flooring. Like replacing the exterior threshold. The transitions from the tile in the kitchen to the wood; the cork hall bath flooring to the wood. Then there's the master bath which we haven't remodeled yet. Who knows what type of flooring we'll be putting in there.
June 23rd: Bruce got the entry through the dining area down the hall finished today. 6 doorways and a closet to work around. Looks so nice! He's working on grinding out the cement at the front door and making a form to pour new cement. Smooth cement so that the new threshold will fit nicely into place. Be so glad when we have the interior done so we can work on the exterior. Specially the front door. Bruce is going to put in a stain glass window. Just add it to the things he needs to do! Poor guy.
June 27-28: Emptied out the "sewing room". The largest room with the heaviest furniture/ equipment in the house. Took most of the day to take apart the 4 base cabinets that make up my cutting table/storage; the roll top desk and my longarm machine. Fortunately, we just needed to take the rails off my machine and put furniture movers under one set of legs and push the machine out of the room. There must of been 40 screws and bolts holding the 4 cabinets and counter tops together. The roll top comes apart in 5 pieces, that's not counting all the drawers. All this stuff and other things I have in the room (ironing table, 3 sets of storage cabinets and file cabinet) pretty much filled up the family and dining rooms.
Pictures are all the stuff in pieces parts from my sewing room. You can see in the second picture some of the empty flooring boxes and a stack of 20 more boxes. We're hoping to be able to return some.
Floor needed a good scraping and one corner of the front wall needed to be repaired with new tape and texture. Bruce got the crown molding up. Now all the rooms except the master bath have crown.
June 29th: Started laying flooring. By noon he had 8 rows in when we discovered a large dip. Went to lunch and stewed on it. Came home and ripped out the floor and found a definite dip in the slab. Bruce used one of my 3' cutting mats and cut rings out of it and used the under layment tape to tape them in place to fill the dip. Flooring is back in and you can walk on the area and not "sink". It was right at the entry to the room and may just have been where the front right leg of my longarm would fall. The flooring would surely have cracked under the weight of the machine.
June 29th is the anniversary of my mother passing away. Hard to believe it's been 31 years. That's most of my adult life.
We bought a new curtain rod for the family room and new drapes. Had to sew 2 panels together for each side. They still need to be hemmed. Wanted them to hang for awhile to settle before I cut them off. Besides, I have no sewing room right now to work on them. 😊 Uh, oh, I just discovered I have emojis I can use.
Sewing room is done except for one length (20') by about 3 feet. Stopped for lunch and a trip to Home Depot and Lowe's. By the time we got back didn't feel like changing back into work clothes. It will get done tomorrow. Hopefully the wall will be dry enough for paint. Once Bruce gets the shoe molding on the baseboards, I can putty the nail holes and seams. A day to dry and then a touch up of paint. So by Tuesday we should be ready to rebuild my cutting table and move everything back.
