Friday: Called Sears Home Services to schedule repairmen to come out. Bruce thought by calling them we'd get one guy to do it all. Wrong. The repairman for the garage door opener would be out later that day. Saturday they are sending out a guy for the refrigerator. The dryer, water softener and water filter (2 different people) won't be out until Wednesday.
Garage door guy showed up and said the opener was not worth repairing. He sold us one that was equivalent to what we had but a better brand than our Genie. He said repairmen will never install a "box store" brand. Unfortunately, he didn't have one with him and would be back the next day.
Saturday: The new garage door opener was installed. Suppose to be better than the Genie we had. By Sunday we realized it was so slow to open and you had to be in the driveway before the remote worked. Not Happy.
Refrigerator repairman opened up the back and found a very fried circuit board. Funny thing is that the fuse on it was not burnt out. Isn't that what fuses are for? To pop before you blow the circuit board? Plus on the LG refrigerator the fuse is soldiered in so you can't replace it without replacing the whole board. Anyway the new board has been ordered and will be mailed straight to us and then a repair person will be out on Wednesday to install it. Wednesday is going to be a very busy day!
Sunday: Bought 3 more surge protectors. While trying to get one plugged in behind the roll top we found out that the outlet isn't grounded. Then realized that NONE of the outlets on that circuit are ground. So Monday we need to call the electrician to come out again. Our house was wired very strangely. All the wiring was done in "lines" rather than by room. So the breaker that we're having problems with runs from the master bath/bedroom to the office to the sewing room along the exterior wall....well until it gets to the sewing room then it makes a "U" turn across the front of the house and back down the other wall for one outlet. It's really hard when you are working in a single room and have to through 2 or 3 breakers to get all outlets off and it takes out several other rooms too. Bruce said this is normal because it's easier when they wire a house to do it in straight runs. When we built the Walnut Creek house, he was very specific as to how he wanted the wiring done. Being there 37 years, I just assumed that was the way all houses were.
Monday: More phone calls to service people. Inspector came out to see the meter panel. He'll notify Edison that they can put in a new meter. No more free electrical. :( He was very impressed with the job the electrician did. He told us that the wire connection on the roof was the better way to do it, but that Edison would change it (when they had put in the new power pole they had it wired differently). He said if we could talk them into not changing it, that would be the better way to go. Don't get why the electric company would do it differently then what the inspector says is right. Personally I like how Edison had done it because it looked nicer; but then again...we blew up the next day. (Supposedly for different reasons).
Still needing to dry clothes over at Alissa's. Gave us an opportunity to play with Molly while I did laundry and the kids went out to dinner.
Should be a quiet day tomorrow (Tuesday). The stucco guy may be out to put a first coat on.
Wednesday, May 20th: The repairman came and installed the new circuit board in the refrigerator. It reset itself and then started the motor right up! While he gave it some time to chill, he went out to check the dryer. We were glad he could work on something else; it had sounded like we were having 5 different guys come. Turns out it only took 3. The dryer was declared dead. The parts that it would take to repair it plus labor would cost more than a new one. Plus there was no guarantee that it would work.
Later that day another repairman showed up and gave us the same diagnosis for the water filter and softener. Waited a whole week to be told they couldn't be fixed. :( He was nice and only charged us for one service call for the two appliances.
Thursday we went out and bought a new LG Dryer. Went to several stores to compare brands and prices. Sears had be best deal if I used their MasterCard. The clerk was very sympathetic to our situation and gave gave us every discount he could, plus he got it delivered the next day. Bruce decided to install it himself. But did let them take away the old one. It's the only item we don't have to "show" Edison to prove it couldn't be repaired, but the repairman wrote up a long description for us.
We also went to the computer store and got a "Universal" cord for Bruce's computer. It comes with all different size plugs. Turned out none of them fit tightly enough. If he moved his computer at all the plug would not hold a connection. So we had them order one for the Acer. I know they were trying to get us fixed up quickly, but it turned out costing us several trips across town. But he's all set now.
Friday we went to Lowe's and got a new water filter and softener. Same ones we had before. While Alissa, Molly and I went shopping, Bruce got them installed. Poor guy always gets stuck working. I don't know what people do when they don't have someone who is handy enough to do these things.
Today, Saturday, he has had the power off on the "line" where there is no ground. The electrician came out earlier in the week and couldn't locate where the problem was. It was nothing urgent so they were going to send someone back next week. I've been too scared to plug my longarm or sewing machine in. It's also where I plug in my computer. Rather than sitting at my desk, I'm out here in the family room. Bruce just walked by and said he found it. It was in the outlet in the guest bedroom. Broken wire. He got it all fixed. Now we can get all the surge protectors plugged in around my desk and sewing table. Poor guy has to move the roll top again.
Oh, forgot... the stucco guy came out Thursday and patched up the hole in the wall around the new breaker box. Did a great job. And someday, we'll paint the house and it won't show at all. (I keep seeing my kitchen remodel moving further and further down the list of things that need to get done.)
Friday a man from Edison came out (not sure why). Edison got the paper work from the Inspector saying the inspection was complete. The man had NO clue as to what had happened in the neighborhood. He said to Bruce "I see you upgraded from 110 to 220". Bruce told him only because the meter was blown off the house and had to be rewired anyway. "That couldn't have happened". Really, they don't communicate between departments. He was the one that said that they "the Edison repairman" would redo the connection on the roof. Since it's Saturday now of a 3 day weekend, I'm figuring we'll have "free" power until at least Tuesday. The least they can do for us. :)
We've replaced all items that were damaged except for two. We still need to order a new cord with a transformer for one of our electric picture frames. The other item is our electric blanket. Which can't be "replaced" because now they only make them in fleece. Which is too heavy to keep on the bed year around. We did buy a regular blanket to replace it but Bruce doesn't want to "charge" Edison for it since it's not an electric one. Hoping to get all the paper work done and sent to Edison on Tuesday. Wonder how long it will take to get our money back. And if they'll argue any of it.
